Guide for Level 50 Fisher Gear

What you should wear and use, how you should meld and what the result will be

With patch 2.2 introducing Big Fish and patch 2.3 expanding on this Gathering and Perception has become even more important once you hit level 50 and want to get the fishing guide completed (or at least completed as much as possible). I am not considering GP in this guide as it is irrelevant when talking about fishing. I don’t know if GP will be used in the future but for now I am leaving it out.

Let’s take a look at what gear will give you the absolute best setup possible and then we will talk about melds later. All items mentioned are HQ where applicable:

Rod: Halcyon Rod Supra (G153/P88)
This is a great upgrade introduced in 2.3. In 2.2 the Forager’s Fishing Rod (G143/P88) was introduced but this has now become rather obsolete. You may want to consider the Forager’s Fishing Rod as the Supra can be hard to come by. I should also mention the original Halcyon Rod (G112/P64) as a third alternative.

Head: Forager’s Hat (G4/P82)
Once again a great update introduced in 2.2. The Hamlet Puller’s Hat (G0/P64) is also an option. It can be melded to come closer to the Forager’s Hat but it will never be as good an option.

Body: Fisher’s Shirt (G64/P32)
Not really any alternatives

Hands: Fisher’s Gloves (G48/P0)
Not really any alternatives

Waist: Dodore Survival Belt (G0/P16)
The Dodore Survival Belt replaced Raptorskin Survival Belt (G0/P14) in patch 2.3. It has a bit better stats and will meld a bit better as well

Legs: Fisher’s Gaskins (G32/P3)
Not really any alternatives

Feet: Fisher’s Wading Boots (G3/P32)
Not really any alternatives

Neck: ILV 70 - Often used: Gryphonskin Choker (G0/P0)
The reason we are not using the Dodore Choker is that we will not be able to meld as much gathering and perception to it and we don’t need the GP offered from this. When mining or logging the Dodore Choker may be a better choice but this is for fishing. It should also be mentioned that HQ and NQ have the same melding stats and since this is equipment that is not usable on it’s own you might as well get NQ.

Ears: ILV 70 - Often used: Rose Gold Ear Screws (G0/P0)
As above

Wrists: ILV 70 - Often used: Gryphonskin Wristbands (G0/P0)
As above.

Ring 1: ILV 70 - Often used: Gryphonskin Ring (G0/P0)
As above.

Ring 2: ILV 70 - Often used: Gryphonskin Ring (G0/P0)
As above

So that is the recommended gear. On its own it will add up to a total of
Gathering: 304
Perception: 253

This is all pretty good but we are going to make it a lot better with melding. The rods and Forager’s Hat can’t be melded so there is nothing to gain here but with the rest of the gear there is a lot to gain. Let’s take a look at that. The best use of materia is shown in parentheses and P-I is Gatherer’s Guild Materia level one etc. while G-I is Gatherer’s Guerdon Materia level one etc. I recommend using the order and levels shown below to keep cost and risk of failure as low as possible.

Fisher’s Shirt (+G11/+P6)
(P-IV, G-IV, G-III)

Fisher’s Glove (+G8/+P4)
(G-III, P-II, G-I)

Dodore Survival Belt (+G4/+P3)
(G-II, P-I)

Fisher’s Gaskins (+G6/+P1)
(G-I, G-I, P-I)

Fisher’s Wading Boots (+G1/+P6)
(P-I, P-I, G-I)

Necks, Ears, Wrists, Ring 1 and Ring 2 (+G5/+P5) x 5
(G-III, P-III)

All in all it is possible through melding to add:
Gathering: 55
Perception: 45

All in all this will result in a total of:
Gathering: 359
Perception: 298

Remember that there is still room for improvement using food and Free Company. Tomato Pie HQ will give you +19 gathering for a total of 378 and Landtrap Salad HQ will give you +19 perception for a total of 317.

“Live of the Land II” and “What You See II” will increase Gathering and Perception by 10 so max for Gathering results in 388 and max Perception is 327. Did I miss something? Did I make the wrong calculations? If so please let me know by sending me a post through the forum.

I hope this will help anybody out there who wants to max out their stats and get all of those big fish. You may not need to do all the things described here in this guide but every little stat counts.

Finally a special thank you to Rescuer for his help in finding information about best gear.
